Folk Fest
This Yearly Multi-cultural arts festival is put on by
the Intercultural association of Victoria. Held on the
Inner harbour, it is a showcase of food dance and culture
from countries from around the world. Spanning nine
days and featuring over 1500 performing artists, beer
gardens , food kiosk from around the world and dozens
of artisans. After hours, adults can enjoy the World
beat dance party, fireworks and can cross cultural borders
into the night. » Roots Fest This is a three day event
outdoor music festival held on the grounds of Hatley
Castle. Usually held mid to late July. Three day passes
are available for both day and evening concerts. Musicians
are varied , however most performers are in the rock,
folk, reggae and ska genres. » Shakespeare
Festival
Hosted by Theatre Inconnu, the annual Shakespeare Festival
takes place from mid July to mid August. » Fringe Festival
Usually held in late August early September. This is
a well known event which travels across North America.
It is a showcase of impromptu street performers and
live Theatre. Several venues around town showcase eclectic
performances from around the world. Usually runs for
2-3 weeks. » Salmon Run
Located 20 minutes from the city center on highway 1
towards Duncan is Goldstream Provincial Park. This tranquil
park features a campground and visitor centre which
offers guided walks, talks, displays and programmes
geared towards kids. During the months of October, November
and December, three species of salmon make their way
up stream to spawn. Ask your reservations agent about
tours or directions to the spawning areas. » Saanich Fair
Held at the Saanich Fairgrounds, this is western Canada's
oldest running fair. Agriculture exhibits and competitions,
petting zoos, as well as a causeway of carnival style
rides and games. Runs for approx. 2 days in early September.
» Corn Maze &
Olde Town
The Galey Brothers Corn Maze has been an annual tradition
in the Blenkinsop Valley for several years. During the
fall season, the corn field is transformed into a maze
that will take you through all sorts of different twists
and turns. During the month of October, the maze is
converted into the Haunted Corn Maze. This is a fun
family attraction located in a beautiful rural area
of Greater Victoria. Fresh produce is also available
on site. 4150 Blenkinsop Rd.
» Moss St. Paint
Inn
This popular event showcases local artists and artist
hopefuls in a street side gallery along pleasant Moss
Street. Beer gardens and craft stands make for an enjoyable
stroll. Proceeds go to support the Greater Victoria
Art Gallery, which is on Moss St. Day is capped off
with an evening dance. » Canada Day
Celebrations
This is our day to celebrate what it is to be Canadian.
Events take place throughout the day. Festivities include
the Great Canadian Family Picnic in Beacon Hill Park,
Juan de Fuca, and at the Sooke Flats. Fireworks in the
evening in the Inner Harbour. Shopping, busses and ferries
may be affected as this is a statutory holiday.
» Opening of
the Legislature
The opening ceremonies of the British Columbia Legislature
is a very formal and prestigious event. It is the first
sitting of the house for the year. The arrival of the
Lieutenant Governor and his reading of his speech from
the throne marks the beginning of the event. The speech
from the throne outlines the objectives of the government
over the fiscal year. Limited seating is available in
the upper gallery, and semi-formal dress is suggested.
» Luxton Rodeo
Sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association,
this is Vancouver Island's only professional rodeo.
It features world and Canadian champion cowboys, free
grounds admission to midway, blacksmith, and antique
farm equipment. There are dances on Saturday and dog
pulls on Saturday and Sunday from noon till 2 p.m. Rodeo
events begin at 2 p.m. daily. Luxton Fair Grounds. » Christmas Lights
Tour
Victoria comes alive as the Christmas Season nears.
Downtown streets are decorated, and light posts carry
wreaths. The parliament buildings are alight with colored
bulbs. Every year, a driving map listing the most well
decorated streets is printed in the local paper, which
makes for a pleasant evening drive as you decide which
neighborhood has done the best job. Also not to be missed
are the Christmas lights at the famed Butchart Gardens,
as well as the many ships which are decorated and sail
both in the Inner Harbour and off the Sidney Docks. » Symphony Splash
The season is kicked off on the first weekend in August
with the Symphony Splash, a free concert held from a
barge in the inner harbour. The Victoria Symphony performance
season runs from October thru May. For performance information,
