It doesn’t take long to discover why the motto of the Storey Creek Golf Club is, A course in Nature. Eagles soar, wild deer wander, and the occasional black bear ambles across the course. And, thanks to the salmon enhancement program initiated by greens superintendent, Reg Franklin, each year, between 5,000 and 10,000 salmon fry are introduced to the course’s creeks and streams that then slash their way through the local waterways on their journey to the sea.
Located just south of the town of Campbell River, the Les Furber designed course opened in 1990. Carved out of the surrounding forest, each hole is wrapped in its own grove of trees, eighteen separate beacons of tranquility. It’s the reason golfing aficionados eagerly make the trip to Storey Creek and subsequently praise the course. It has been voted one of ScoreGolf Magazine’s top 100 courses in Canada and been awarded a prestigious four-star ranking by Golf Digest.
At Storey Creek, it’s all about the tee shot and keeping the ball in play. On the front nine, the second hole is a 405-yard, par four that doglegs to the left. On one side are the ripples of Franklin’s Moat, and on the other is a stand of pines that blocks out a clear shot to a well-bunkered green. The only option is down the middle.
On the back loop, the seventeenth is another hole that demands your full attention from the tee. The 183-yard, par three plays across a rock wall that buttresses the banks of Woods Creek. Bail out left, and you’re into a ball-gobbling tree. On the right is a hungry, greenside bunker. Storey Creek Golf club not only is a course in nature, it is also a course in great golf.
